Year 5 – Victorian Experience at GressenHall

        Author: Jill Bates

On Thursday 19th October, Year 5 visited GressenHall workhouse for an immersive Victorian experience day. We stepped back in time and met with four costumed characters (the school master, laundry maid, farm owner and workhouse pauper). We undertook a variety of activities from: being put to work in the fields with the heavy horses, taken to the schoolroom for a Victorian school lesson, meeting with a workhouse pauper to pick Oakham find out what life was like in the workhouse and lending a hand in a Victorian kitchen and washhouse. Throughout the day we were tasked with the mystery of who stole the pair of silver candle sticks. We had to gather information from each of the characters to deduce the culprit! We had a fabulous day stepping into the role of Victorian children and discovering what life was really like for different members of society during this era.
