        Safer Internet Day 2023

What a busy day the children have had celebrating Safer Internet Day 2023. This year’s theme is “Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online.” The children began the day by delivering Collective Worships to KS1 and KS2 children. KS1 children listened to the story of ‘Hanni the Magic Window’ where they heard the importance of talking about a problem or a worry and how an adult can help to solve any issues.

Each class completed an activity linked to this year’s theme. Reception children identified an adult they could talk to if they had a worry about going online. Children in KS1 identified ways to stay safe online such as never talking to strangers, playing on age-appropriate games and keeping your password private. They also identified an adult they could talk to and wrote about it. E-Safety champions in KS1 supported their teacher in delivering their lesson. They asked children questions about the story ‘Hanni and the Magic Window’ and came up with supportive pieces of advice for children in their class.

In KS2 children took part in a range of activities discussing issues they may come across online. Year 3 focussed on what activities online they would need permission for whilst year 4 role played a range of scenarios and explained what they would do to resolve the scenario. Year 5 focussed on online profiles and learnt how to decide if a profile is trustworthy or not. In Year 6, children gave online safety advice on different problems children may come across online.

Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote in our schools. Celebrating Safer Internet Day annually provides us with an opportunity to re-emphasise e-safety messages which we teach throughout the year. The message this year of talking about what we see and do online is vital in helping to keep our children safe but also allowing them to enjoy their time online. We really feel committed to our role of empowering children to enjoy their time online safely.

Parents and carers were invited alongside their families to join Dan Hawbrook’s quiz and workshop linked to this year’s Safer Internet Day theme. Dan Hawbrook is an e-safety officer who works for the Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Partnership.
