Once Upon a Time…in Year One

        Author: Jill Bates

Once upon a time in a land close by, the Year One classes were overrun by some fabulous fairytale characters. We saw some truly fantastic fairytale costumes including sparkly princesses, brave knights, delicious gingerbread men and many, many more. The children received a letter from one of our reading dogs Inference Iggy to use their best detective skills to find out which fairytale character had been on our playground. The children were extremely excited to find out who it was! First of all, we found some huge, green troll prints on the playground leading to the trim trail area. Next, we found a sparkling, blue river under the “bridge” (the trim trail!) and we climbed over it to spot anymore clues.  Finally, we found a troll face and a hidden goat. They soon realised that the troll from ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ had visited our playground and couldn’t wait to hear the story. Throughout the magical day, the children designed and created a new bridge for the Billy Goats Gruff and each teacher shared their own favourite traditional tale. What a stunning start to our topic!
