        Not so Rotten Romans!

        Author: Jill Bates

What an amazing day Year 4 children at Bourne Abbey Primary Academy had this week at the Peterborough Museum. We began our Roman experience by travelling back in time to AD 70 and finding out about the Roman town of Durobrivae and Castor Palace – one of the largest Palaces of the time. We experienced shopping at the market in Durobrivae with real Roman coins, preparing a meal in Castor Palace kitchens using the type of ingredients and equipment available to the Roman cooks,  and even tried to dress like a Roman using  a toga.

Having learnt about Roman life in our local area of Peterborough, we learnt how to create Roman ornaments and crafted our own clay faces. Using all the skills of an archaeologist, our next challenge was to handle and draw conclusions about real Roman artefacts found in this area. Finally, we visited the Roman doctor, where we experienced some strange and quiet scary methods of healing!

What a super way to finish an amazing History study of the ‘not so’ Rotten Romans.
