        Farmer George came to visit

        Author: Megan Shears

This term our focus in Reception is all about farming and Spring animals. We have been sharing lots of non-fiction books and fiction books such as, “A Squash and a Squeeze” and, “The Scarecrow’s Wedding.”

We were so excited to welcome Farmer George and his big yellow tractor to Bourne Abbey. The day started with Farmer George talking to the children about the farm and the jobs he has to do. He brought grains of wheat, oats, barley and hay for the children to look at and handle. Farmer George explained how these are used in everyday life for making porridge, flour and bread.

The children were so excited to look at the tractor and name all the different parts of it and they asked some really good questions such as: How do the wheels move and how does the tractor drive itself? Farmer George explained that the computers in the cab can be programmed to do this and make farming jobs much easier. A particular highlight for everyone was being able to sit in the cab.

We talked about farming now and in the past. The children could not believe that horses used to pull ploughs and other machinery (horse power) compared to present day tractors and machinery.

Thank you Farmer George, we had a fantastic day!
