        Books, books, books!

On Thursday 3rd March, the classrooms and corridors of Bourne Elsea Park and Bourne Abbey Primary Academies were literally buzzing with excitement as the 25th World Book Day was celebrated. Each year the children stun the staff at these two schools with their passion for reading and books; and their enthusiasm for dressing as their story-book heroes, but this year exceeded everyone’s expectations. Every corner was filled with classic, well-loved characters including; Harry Potter, The Stick Man, Gandalf, The Queen of Hearts, Mary Poppins and even the odd troll. But there were also plenty of new friends joining the gang too, most notably Gangsta Granny and the Billionaire Boy!

However, this year’s celebrations actually began on Tuesday 1st March when the Year 3 children took part in an author and illustrator workshop with Bethan Woollvin, followed by a Trust-wide Zoom, where every child in the Abbey Academies Trust came together via Zoom to share Bethan’s latest adventure, Three Little Vikings. To end the ‘meeting’, Bethan set the children the challenge of creating a fourth Little Viking. The children were bursting with excitement and desperate to get drawing, and that was before Bethan announced that the 7 most creative entries would receive an exclusive Bethan Woollvin print as a prize.

To begin the official World Book Day, the children gathered together to hear extracts of some all-time favourite books and take part in the What’s In The Bag? guessing game. One well-disguised teacher even got to live out a life-long dream of taking part in The Masked Singer when the children spontaneously burst into a chorus of “Take it off!” as she revealed the clues for her favourite book.

Then, throughout the day, the children at both schools completed a wide range of story-based challenges and activities. From sharing stories with reading buddies across different year groups and planning and acting out adventures for their potato characters, to designing the Viking characters and writing World Book Day inspired poems.

Mrs Campbell (Reception Teacher) said, “It’s just absolutely wonderful to see children coming together to share their love of books. It’s been a truly momentous day and I am thrilled to see how genuinely enthusiastic our children are about books and reading.”

All in all, it was a 25th World Book Day celebration to be proud of – we just devastated we’ve got to wait a whole year until we can do it all again!
