Who gets your vote?

Democracy Day 2020 at Bourne Abbey was on Thursday 17th September. Things looked very different this year however! Due to social distancing measures, we were not able to turn the halls into our polling stations for the day: to keep our bubbles separate we voted in our classrooms instead. We still reminded ourselves all about the core British Values – democracy in particular – and the importance of everyone having the right to have their voices heard. We take great pride at Abbey Academies in our democratic election process, which enables every child to vote for their chosen representatives who will form the Student Council for the year ahead, and were happy to be able to complete this process.

On Tuesday 21^st September, amid great excitement, the results of this year’s elections were announced in special virtual assemblies and their teachers awarded the successful candidates their certificates, books and badges.

Mrs Anderson, student council co-ordinator at Bourne Abbey said; “It gives us great pleasure every year to see how much respect children have for their democratic rights and the rights of every child in the school to take part. It was important to us that this continued this year – with the necessary changes! We are so proud of the way the children have adapted to the differences in the process and are taking everything in their stride.”

As Rights Respecting Schools, it is important to us to remember the UNICEF Rights of the Child Charter article 12 ‘Every child has the right to be listened to and for their views to be taken seriously.’ The active part the Bourne Abbey Student Councils play in the decision-making at our schools is at the heart of this and we are excited to see what suggestions are brought to our suitably socially-distanced Student Council meetings this year!
