We Will Make A Mummy Out Of You!

        Author: Helen Fleming

On the 6th of November, 2024, our school day began in the strangest way! Dressed all in white, we were told to stay in our classroom. We weren’t allowed to leave, and no one would explain why. The corridors were dark, strange music echoed in the distance, and our imaginations ran wild. Was it a surprise party? A power outage? Or maybe something about Ancient Egypt? Soon, our teachers revealed the secret: we were going to explore Ancient Egypt! To look the part, we crafted shimmering collar necklaces decorated with jewels. An hour later, we nervously crept out of our classroom—and stepped into the eerie, dark tomb of a Pharaoh! Around him lay priceless treasures and creepy jars filled with ancient organs. Using flashlights, we spotted his golden death mask and even found a hidden treasure chest. But why had this all happened? What did it mean?

Then, a message arrived from the Pharaoh himself, meant only for Year 3! We froze as his voice explained that we had been transported 3,000 years back into Ancient Egyptian times. There was no escape—unless we took on special roles! Each of us picked an envelope to reveal our task: scribe, servant, craftsperson, farmer, or pyramid builder.

The scribes learned to write hidden messages in hieroglyphics, adding them to the Book of the Dead. Busy farmers built shadufs, ancient tools for lifting water from the Nile. Pyramid builders, using sugar cubes, constructed tall, wobbly pyramids that tested their patience. Servants baked warm, delicious bread, while craftspeople sculpted bastets and amulets to honour the gods.

Exhausted but proud, we hoped we had done enough to break the Pharaoh’s curse. And just then, the Pharaoh appeared once more! To show him respect, we carefully mummified his body, placed his organs in jars, gifted him with amulets, and even decorated his tomb with our own artwork. As we placed his death mask over his face, we said our final goodbyes with a dance fit for a Pharaoh.

What a spectacular day! We had truly travelled back to Ancient Egypt and survived a day filled with mystery, adventure, and excitement!

Mia expressed her excitement by saying ‘I don’t want this day to ever end!’
