Have you ever been to Mount Everest base camp? – Yr3

        Author: Helen Fleming

As we entered Year 3 today there was a feeling of hope. We quickly learnt that we were going to spend the morning learning about Mount Everest. Did you know it sits across two countries? Also known as ‘The Goddess of the Sky,’ Mount Everest is surrounded by stunning natural wonders. We loved to learn that monkeys with upturned noses sneeze when it rains as their nostrils fill with water . Sherpa people are at the heart of these fascinating Himalayan mountains, climbing with their cattle and supporting explorers who brave these mountains.

After learning these fascinating facts, we visited Mount Everest Base Camp. WOW! Inside we saw a stunning array of equipment that mountaineers require to succeed in their venture. Crampons, rope, dehydrated food, helmet and mosquito nets are naming just a few. We couldn’t believe how heavy the carabiners were.

We had quickly learnt that mountaineers show many of our Christian Values when conquering the climb. As a class we identified determination, courage and perseverance. Excitedly, we received and accepted challenges of our own to try to imagine the thoughts and feelings that the mountaineers experienced.

We couldn’t wait to solve mathematical problems, construct igloos, use science to create paper mountaineers that can climb a door and balance on a variety of beams. We could not even imagine how mountaineers feel once they have struggled through an 8,848m climb. A climb that continues to grow 10mm each year.

‘The children were completely engrossed in the challenging activities, they persevered, displayed bucket loads of courage as they reached the summit 8,848m high.’ Miss Fleming
