Bourne Abbey’s World Book Day 2023

        Author: Jill Bates

What an amazing World Book Day we have had this year at Bourne Abbey!

The day started with Collective Worships for all year groups, where some of our new Reading Ambassadors shared their ‘top reads’ of the moment – Leo for example shared ‘Max Magic’ which he said was “great for people who like magic, it even shows you how to do some of the tricks!” Ciaran recommended ‘Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief’ saying “the books are based on Greek mythology, but also full of action and adventure.”

Mr Whiteway, who led the Key Stage Two Collective Worship, was simply staggered by the amazing variety (and inventiveness) of some of the costumes – both from pupils and staff! We even managed to bring the dinosaur from the original Jurassic Park book along to the event, as you can see from our photographs from the day. After this, classes made time to talk about their reading and consider what they can choose and enjoy for the future.

Our World Book Day culminated in our exciting ‘Bring and Buy’ book sale for parents, carers and children. Again, our Reading Ambassadors rose to the occasion, showing excellent motivation and perseverance in setting up the stalls for the books to be sold and encouraging as many people as possible to buy an extra book (or two) on World Book Day. We want to take this opportunity to thank our school community, who made this sale possible by donating lots of books – meaning that the books get a second chance to be read, enjoyed and loved again. Our Reading Ambassadors were very happy by the end, saying we had sold an “amazing” number of books.

It was a World Book Day to be remembered, and we are keen to repeat our ‘Bring and Buy’ book sale sometime later this year.
