        Bourne Abbey Loves Languages!

        Author: Jill Bates

On 26 September, Miss Pape, Director of Languages, led celebrations for the European Day of Languages. Within Bourne Abbey and Bourne Elsea Park we celebrated diversity, and brought into focus the importance of multilingualism in our everyday lives. The principle message conveyed to the children was that foreign language skills are a necessary right for each and everyone one of us, regardless of nationality, geographical location, age or ability.

Within our two schools we celebrated the European languages that we speak – which total a whopping 12! We couldn’t believe that we had so much linguistic diversity in our classrooms. We were tasked with finding out as much as we could about our European neighbours. Each class and their class teacher were given a country to research and present their finding in poster format. Both staff and children had a tremendous time learning new facts and even learning how to say ‘hello’ in Lithuanian, Polish, Ukranian, Spanish, French and Italian to name a few. We not only learned to cherish our own cultural traditions but also fostered a greater understanding of other cultures.
