A Brilliant Beginning in Year 4!

        Author: Jill Bates

On Thursday, Year 4 took part in an ‘immersive experience’ which enabled them to develop their understanding of life in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii; before it was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The children had a fantastic time dressing up in Roman togas and exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the harbour. Most of the children enjoyed spending time sniffing the freshly baked bread and various spices and oils, and holding the stunning collection of sea shells in the market.

While exploring the sights, smells and heat of Pompeii, the children were also exposed to the sounds of the city as the room was filled with the sounds of squawking seagulls, the gentle crashing of waves and the bartering of the stall holders.

By the time the experience was over, every child had a better understanding of life in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii – something that will help them enormously in their upcoming English lessons!

What a way to start the year!
