The Languages curriculum at Bourne Abbey

At our school, we offer a dynamic and engaging Spanish curriculum designed to inspire a lifelong love of languages. Under the guidance of our Director of Languages, we have developed a bespoke curriculum grounded in best practice to ensure every child thrives. Our curriculum is supported by the Language Angels resource, which enhances learning and supports non-specialist teachers in delivering high-quality language instruction. We are passionate about language learning as it aligns with our vision of nurturing each child’s potential and valuing their unique contributions.

In addition to our curriculum, we provide extracurricular opportunities such as participating in the National Spanish Bee, allowing students to showcase their skills and enthusiasm for the language in a competitive setting. By fostering curiosity and confidence in Spanish, we prepare students for a global world, reflecting our commitment to academic excellence and the flourishing of all.

Success for Spanish! Spring Term 2023

We are pleased to share the news that Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy has been recognised for its language teaching and has been awarded the ‘Enhancing’ Primary Languages Development Award from the Primary Languages Network. This award is designed to give schools the opportunity to raise the profile of modern foreign language learning and to embed good teaching and learning in the curriculum.

Since introducing Spanish in September 2022, Miss Pape, Director of MFL, has passionately led the development and success of primary foreign languages across the school in KS1 and KS2.

Miss Pape said that, ‘At Bourne Abbey we believe that learning a new language gives our pupils the skills and understanding they need to develop their aspirations and knowledge of the world as well as an understanding of their own culture and identity.’

We are absolutely thrilled that the combination of the Trust’s vision, the incredible commitment of the Director of Languages and the engagement and enthusiasm of the children have contributed to this amazing progress. We look forward to seeing how much more the school progresses in its whole school language learning journey.
